IPO SIDE EVENT AT UN VIENNA CND

The International Police Organization Delegation led by IPO Founder Prof. Ilija Zivotic, together with the Italian Association "Dico No Alla Droga", actively participated in the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs - CND that took place in Vienna, Austria, 10 - 14 March 2025, contributing to the discussions on the main global challenges in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.

The Commission holds annual sessions for the duration of one week in the first half of the year, as well as one-day reconvened sessions at the end of each year to consider administrative and budgetary matters. The Commission has a maximum number of eight working days for its session, pursuant to Economic and Social Council resolution 1991/39. In order to examine draft decisions, draft resolutions and specific technical issues, a Committee of the Whole is convened concurrently with the annual session of the Commission. Intersessional meetings of the Commission are convened to finalize the provisional agenda of the Commission; to address organizational and substantive matters; and to provide continuous and effective policy guidance.

In addition to the main Conference, IPO organized a dedicated Side Event focused on the "Consumption of Psychoactive Substances in Europe and the Western Balkans" providing valuable insights into current trends and preventive measures. The session was attended by representatives of various institutions, including police and law enforcement agencies from many countries, as well as institutions and the Government of the Republic of Serbia.

This participation highlights the crucial role of international collaboration in addressing drug abuse and trafficking. The engagement of organizations like the International Police Organization IPO and Dico No Alla Droga, along with the US Department of Justice and the Serbian Government, demonstrates a strong commitment to tackling the global drug crisis through policy discussions, intelligence sharing, and preventive strategies.

The dedicated session on psychoactive substance consumption in Europe and the Western Balkans is particularly relevant, considering the rising challenges posed by synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances (NPS) in the region. These discussions provide essential insights into emerging trends and the most effective prevention models.

The participation of the International Police Organization, including the Italian and Serbian Sections, underlined the importance of joint efforts in combating this global problem.
